Castles


Caseneuve Fortress
The only medieval and best-preserved fortress in the area, stands in the land of Apt. At the foot of the fortress, lies Caseneuve with its stone-paved streets. The building is refered to as soon as the 10th century. Belonging to the Agoult-Simiane family, the fortress dates back to the 13th century. Mark the Renaissance and 18th century openings. Private property, not open to visit.

Château - Gignac

18th century castle, Classified Historical Monument, built in a park with terraces. Restored, the rooms display 18th century furniture (beautiful wooden banister, superb gypsums, ..). Private property. Can be visited for the Day of Patrimony (sept.).

Château - Rustrel

The castle was probably built by the dukes de Lévis Ventadour, Lords of Rustrel, in the 17th century. The sundial shows a stone inscription dated to 1626.
In 1858, a clock, a bell and a clocktower were added to the south western wing. In 1992, the municipality completed the building of the north western part.
A 17th century painted wall, probably made with the local colours, is being restored. The hall room, the Louis XIII style fireplace with a stone inscription "l'épée est mon droit" is Classified Historical Monument.

Château médiéval et Chapelle Castrale - Saint Saturnin lès Apt
Remnants of the Medieval castle watches over the village. The castle had 3 fortified 12th, 14th and 16th centuries ramparts. Today, only the Portail Ayguier can be seen.
In the castle' s chapel, the Saint Saturnin miracle, or "Rosette Tamisier affair " took place and long before Lourdes, excited French Catholic lives. The chapel has been restored. See the Romanesque altar, the 11th century carved wooden thone, the apse showing a stone inscription dated to 1050, a painting "la descente de la croix". Guided tours in july and august.
