Appelations
Since Roman times, the light, stony soil of the hillsides has been used for growing vines. Luberon's 5000 hectares (123555 acres) produce almost half of France's edible grapes including two appellation d'origine contrôlée grapes.
A.O.C. Luberon
Situated on the narrowest bank of the River Calavon, only the best exposed terraces and hillsides, sloping steeply down from the Massif du Luberon, are reserved for the A.O.C. vineyards.
These unique conditions produce a variety of grapes: the sweet, fruity, full-bodied Grenache, the rich, spicy, aromatic Syrah, Cinsault and Carignan.
The different grape varieties combined with centuries of wine-growing expertise give the A.O.C Luberon its characteristic light, fruity character
A.O.C. Ventoux
On the opposite bank of the Calavon, in the widest part of the valley, lie the A.O.C Ventoux vineyards on a gentle slope leading down to the foothills of the Monts de Vaucluse.
These largely south and east-facing vineyards have marly, ochry or stony soils that lend a unique character and flavour to the same grapes as the A.O.C Luberon vineyards.
These wines are either fruity and refined or bold and robust, and age well.
